Yayasan Petronas | Where Good Flourishes

Terrestrial Ecosystems

Working alongside government agencies and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Yayasan PETRONAS delivers impact-driven environmental programmes that promote rehabilitation, biodiversity, and community resilience to safeguard the environment for future generations.

Our Programmes

One Million Trees (OMT)

The One Million Trees (OMT) programme aims to build community resilience through efforts that support the restoration of Malaysia’s lush natural forest landscapes.

In achieving the goal to plant a million trees, the OMT programme emphasises community engagement that fosters greater shared responsibility in conserving our precious forest and mangrove ecosystems.

Over 10,000 trees were planted in the initial phase of a strategic partnership between the Foundation and Sabah Forestry Department to conserve the Kungkular Forest Reserve whilst also supporting four nearby villages that benefit from the forest ecosystem services.

In expanding the OMT programme, 2024 also saw additional land and partnerships secured in Sungai Santi, Johor and Kuala Sepetang, Perak, to support community involvement in planting 118,000 trees across the two sites.

Warisan Hijau Nature Trail

As part of another strategic partnership between Yayasan PETRONAS and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), the Warisan Hijau Nature Trail was completed in October 2024.

Spanning 950 meters, the trail was developed following extensive baseline studies and visits to the site. Set within one of the last remaining freshwater swamp forests in the Kinta Tengah district, this eco-friendly pathway offers more than just a walk, it is a journey into the heart of nature.

The trail also features an interpretative route, complete with a sustainable boardwalk and informative signage, designed to educate and inspire the UTP community about the crucial importance of environmental conservation.

Imbak Canyon Conservation Area and Imbak Canyon Studies Centre

PETRONAS is the first largest local funder for Yayasan Sabah Group in the preservation of a gazetted conservation area in Sabah, investing RM83 million in the 27 hectare Imbak Canyon Studies Centre (ICSC) – a world-class rainforest biodiversity research facility located in the 27,000 hectare Imbak Canyon Conservation Area (ICCA).

Through the ICSC, we aim to enhance the gene bank for the conservation and exploration of pharmaceutical and biotechnological applications from plants in this area.

We believe that someday a new cure for diseases, a sustainable source of energy or a signature perfume scent can be unearthed right here.

Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM)

Reinforcing its commitment to community resilience, Yayasan PETRONAS supported the Global Environment Centre (GEC) in implementing Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) programmes across Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Perak. Through partnerships, training, and awareness initiatives, the programme equips local communities to understand disaster risks and develop effective, environmentally sound response plans.

In 2024, Yayasan PETRONAS also provided 7,160 Care Packages to Jabatan Kebajikan Malaysia (JKM) depots nationwide during the monsoon season and extended post-disaster support, including new school furniture for four schools, schooling materials for 1,666 affected students, and clean water supply restoration for three villages.
